Hello from Hillbilly Heaven! There is nothing to report on the political news, since we have not had the state meeting yet. But I would like to encourage every one to do a little research on the political candidates before the elections this fall. Find out where they stand on hunting and dog ownership issues, where their campaigning funds are coming from? We need to support the ones who are on our side; we need all the help we can get in our fight for our rights.
Speaking of fighting for our rights, I have come to realize that when a wise old houndsman once told me “Coonhunters are the least likely to stand up and fight for their sport and the most stingy when it comes to donating to their cause”, he was 100 percent correct! Don’t get me wrong, we are passionate about our sport: we will drive 100 miles to a hunt, spend $25 to enter, drive another 50 miles during the hunt, then another 100 miles back home! When it comes to a fund raising auction though, we won’t spend over $50 or $60 for a top notch coon dog stud fee. We will lose sleep and sometimes work to find a lost dog, but can’t take one Sunday afternoon, every other month, to attend a meeting to help keep our sport. We will stand around at a hunt and tell anyone who will listen just what we coon hunters need to do to raise money, or how to defend ourselves, but we won’t stand up at a meeting and say “I have an idea” or “I have a suggestion”.
Why this is true, I don’t know, but I do know that we had better change this or we won’t have to worry about it! We won’t be able to hunt or even own dogs. As stated in another column, there are rules being considered that would make it impossible to hold night hunts. They (DNRE) want us to have written permission from every landowner for every property to be hunted! They also want to restrict the areas hunted to one county! This affects coon hunters and if coon hunters don’t fight against these rules and regulations, who will? So who do you think is attending the meetings about all of this? Are you? Probably not, but Jim Wale and/or Rich Porteen from the MSUCHA will be; this is just another example of what the State Assn does and why it is so important to support them.
While I am up on my soap box, I have one other thing to comment on. Being the Vice President, and therefore hunt director, this year I was completely disappointed in the support that the State Assoc. received from individual clubs this year. We are supposed to be a collection of people from all oc the clubs in the state of Michigan, hence the name Michigan state UNITED coon hunters. Therefore, the State hunt and the youth state hunt are actually every clubs’ hunt. I believe there were two clubs who donated to the state hunt, and I believe only one club that donated to the youth hunt! There must be around 15 active clubs in Michigan; that’s not a very good percentage of clubs helping our cause. Same thing with attendance at the meetings and being officers; they are all from 2-3 clubs, where are the rest of you? Don’t have the time or money? Don’t worry about it; you will have more of both when you can no longer attend hunts and shows because YOU let the anti-hunters take away YOUR right to do so!
Until that day comes, good huntin!
